Window 4 – Communion Window

The fourth window is “In Remembrance Of Me,” a direct quote from 1 Corinthians 11:24. For the historic record, this window with the chalice in the center was the first window to be designed and produced after the sanctuary was built in 1998. The rationale for labeling it #4 was that overall, the Bible comes first, then the confession “Jesus Is Lord” is next, followed by baptism and communion. But in design and production they did not come in that order.

Each of the four Gospels record the Last Supper of Jesus, which is celebrated under various names including the Eucharist, the Lord’s Supper, Holy Communion, or simply the breaking of bread. Aside from the gospels, it is recorded Acts 2:42, 1 Corinthians 10:16-17 & 11:23-29.

The loaf and cup come from wheat and grapes. The Gospel of John has a last supper, but its narrative is on foot washing with no mention of the loaf and cup. However, only John’s gospel records Jesus saying “I am the bread of life.” (John 6:35 and 6:48) and “I am the true vine” (John 15:1).

It is called the Communion Window.  The red chalice with St. Andrew’s X-shaped cross is the denominational symbol of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The reason the Disciples chose a chalice was that it represented communion as a focal point of each Sunday’s worship service in most Disciples congregations.
